Great article. I was reading it while at a new doctor’s office where the doctor asked why I didn’t fill in my “gender.” I asked if they wanted my gender or my gender identity (it was the latter). I said I have a philosophical issue with the question and can't see the relevance of my thoughts or feelings to the doctor. She said it’s medically relevant because then they can offer changes to my body - so are they asking this question to drum up business??? Unrelated to your article - but sort of related.

I can't 'like' that comment because Jesus! It's so gross!! But good on you for reminding us what it's like if you live in NYC. Hard to imagine you could easily jump to a doctor who's in touch with biological reality and willing to admit it. Also very, very good on you for challenging her!! I'd love to know if you were the first.

Hippiesq's avatar

I'm pretty sure I was the first, and she was totally confused as to why I refused to answer. She thought I was protecting my privacy, and then, for a second, she got really excited when she thought that I actually "felt like a man," whatever the hell that means.

I am sad to say finding a doctor who is not caught up in this nonsense is almost impossible, especially in NYC. I had such a doctor, my former PCP, who literally disappeared - her office had no idea what happened to her. She just stopped coming and they never heard from her again. (I don't think her disappearance is related to her understanding of reality.)

Eleganta's avatar

She just stopping coming to the office?

What on earth?

Was she reported as a missing person?

Hippiesq's avatar

I don't know. The office was very upset. She had 3 teenage kids and a life - so somebody must have known her whereabouts.

Eleganta's avatar

Good lord. I hope she's all right.

Hippiesq's avatar

I just found out what happened. I looked again (nothing came up on Google last summer when I found out she was gone). It turns out she sued her partner, who she says stopped paying her salary, failed to profit-share or pay for certain malpractice insurance, disability insurance and continuing education expenses. It's a whole thing - and that's why she "disappeared." Mystery solved - thanks for pushing me to look again! :)

Yerina Vavstraliye's avatar

When I get asked my gender I always look them straight in the eye and say “guess”

Eleganta's avatar

So they can offer changes to your body????

Oh, my god. They're using their intake form as a marketing tool.

North Country's avatar

May I ask what kind of a doctor’s office was this? Like was it a general practitioner or a plastic surgeon?

Hippiesq's avatar

This is a primary care doctor - which is why her interest in my thoughts about my sex seemed so ridiculous.

North Country's avatar

Thank you. I don’t care for that line of questioning and have only come across it online. (But I’m at the top of our state, the opposite of NYC.) Next time I may write, “Guess!”

To A.G. Leticia James re Glenna Goldis

Dear A.G. James,

I think it was a big mistake to fire Glenna Goldis. Ms Goldis was stating the need to protect children from needless trauma and surgery. It is becoming more and more apparent the irredeemable damage being done to women and children by the sexual fetishists of transgender ideology. Young people are more likely to be suicidal and commit suicide AFTER cosmetic surgeries which mutilate their bodies and foreclose chances for a healthy future. The majority of people know this and more are realizing the terrible harm this is inflicting on women's rights, women's shelters, sports, rape crises centers and prisons. Unfortunately, you are supporting a losing cause that puts sexual fetishists ahead of the safety of women and children. Sincerely, Betsy Warrior

Hippiesq's avatar

Beautifully put.

Darn right your work threatens her (James') credibility. Thank you!

I love the bit about how it's wrong to refuse ''sex reassignment' procedures to 'trans' people if you offer them to 'cis' people. *snorf!*

Felinias's avatar

What do you think makes James so committed to this cause? Is she a true believer, or is it purely careerist? I suspect a lot of people inside Democratic politics start off the latter, but then get high on their own virtue and moral righteousness the more they're surrounded by the schmoozing adulation of groups like GLAAD.

"I refuse to join any club that would have me as a member." -- Groucho Marx

Whip smart, that man was. It's a risky thing to join a tribe -- necessary to survive, but risky - especially for the weak-minded, who are extra-susceptible to groupthink and dogma.

Robin A.'s avatar

Always loved that Groucho quote. Use it all the time. 👍

Robin A.'s avatar

I loved when Harpo reenacted his mirror image routine with Lucille Ball. The Marx Brothers were so sophisticated in their slapstick comedy. Way better than The Three Stooges in my humble opinion.

Eleganta's avatar

We quote Groucho constantly. I don't think a week goes by that someone in our house doesn't say, "If I get any closer, I'll be in back of ya."

I used to teach novel-writing by quoting his joke, "Outside of a dog, a book is your best friend. Inside of a dog, it's too dark to read."

The first thing we ever let our son watch onscreen was the Marx Brothers. My husband cut up their movies into just the funny scenes and musical interludes and put them on a laptop for him. He watched that for years. Between the ages of 8 and 11, he "identified" as Harpo. lol

Robin A.'s avatar

Another great line! Your husband sounds like my kind of guy. As it is every time TCM has a Marx Brothers day my husband and I are watching. Night at The Opera is probably my favorite by a slight margin but they’re all good. You may be familiar with this but if not it’s worth checking out. A compilation of the best Grouchoisms. 🥰:

I must confess a particular fondness for A Night in Casablanca just because I love Casablanca.

And the rollerskating scene in The Big Store is something else.

Robin A.'s avatar

Also good. Can’t argue as we are talking about degrees of greatness. Harpo and Chico crack me up too.

I agree with you whole heartedly, as a liberal Democrat. I feel that in general, requiring doctors to make any physical changes, especially unnecessary amputations, is not lawful. Minors are not mature enough to make this decision. They can cross dress until they are 21, and then decide if they really want to elect for the removal of their breasts or penis, or to take hormones. We would never enforce the removal of other body parts if a person identified as hating that part. That is cosmetic surgery, which is elective, and also should not be placed on a child unless there is certain cases(like accidents of birth defects). Puberty blockers should not be experimented with on children either. They are way too young to understand adult sexuality. Most young children cross dress. What happened to the teachings of Mr. Rogers- that we all are special just the way we are, and our insides are the only thing that matters.

Faith Kuzma's avatar

Did you see what the cosmetic surgery folks just issued??

Jennifer Priebe's avatar

Thanks for bringing that to my attention! That is very interesting, and I am glad. Kids do all sorts of immature things that they regret when they are adults. I would go so far as to say no cosmetic surgery of any kind, or tattoos for under 18, unless it to correct a disfiguring accident or birth defect like a cleft palate. They all must be nervous about adults treated as minors coming back with lawsuits. I would also say there should be a requirement for adults to have a certain amount of time cross dressing before any surgeries, and a mental health assessment to make sure they are ok and well before making an irreversible decision.

Faith Kuzma's avatar

Adults are also subject to the lies, deception, and outright consumer fraud of gender medicine, right? To me, it's no accident Glanna Goldis was the one of all Jame's stable of lawyers, to be fired.

Faith Kuzma's avatar

yes, and on the surface, plastic surgery has more/ most to gain from ongoing adherence to the gender show.

Oh, Glenna--if there's one person I wish we could clone! May you summon impenetrable armies!

Thank you for this article and for all that you are doing!

Jenny Poyer Ackerman's avatar

Brilliant, Glenna! And I hope you'll understand my meaning when I say 'sorry-not-sorry!' about your firing. I can't help but think the NY AG made a mistake very similar to the one made by the State of Illinois concerning DIAG. Both states are likely to regret these moves, but not until their targets get a good long turn with the megaphone. You'll certainly make the most of yours, as this post demonstrates. Well done!

Great article. The bathroom sign is very common in Portland. I once asked at a local yoga studio, which had combo change/shower/restrooms with absolutely no visual privacy why the women’s area was open to men. Their response was that if *I* was uncomfortable with trans women in that restroom then there was a single person restroom on the second floor…I asked them “then why don’t the vanishingly small number of men who don’t feel comfortable in the men’s room use that? Rather than taking away the single sex space for all the women?”…. They told me if I was so uncomfortable that I could find another studio to attend.

Glenna Goldis -- enormous respect! So Letitia James fired you? Wrong move! You have been a clear and brave voice for biological reality and cultural competence. As an old liberal Democrat, I'm appalled that the current "leadership" is determined to sacrifice us all on Trans Hill.

Your words: "I thought they were really uniformed, honestly" (YouTube, TFP interview) and I appreciate this optimistic, generous attitude of yours -- it really does read well. I first encountered your sex realist stance on Stephanie Winn's podcast.

Regarding the major content of this post, the legal analysis -- you are thorough and convincing, and, though it doesn't apply to me, I hope it's helpful to the beleaguered medical providers.

And it's a complete horror story that the standard medical institutions -- e.g. the American Academy of Pediatrics -- typically our protections against crank medical ideas -- have been coopted by transgender nonsense. This will have bad results in other health circumstances (e.g. infectious disease), as the credibility of these organizations declines due to "affirmative care".

Faith Kuzma's avatar

Ok, possibly looking too simplistic here:

So…the State would have to prove the girl seeking mastectomy had the same risks as the typical “cis” woman diagnosed with cancer?

In other words, James will never take the case to court bc it demands too much evidence- based medicine to be presented...?

Daniel Howard James's avatar

Good point. Proving that health outcomes improve after elective mastectomy for women not genetically predisposed to breast cancer could be difficult.

A better analogy could be those women who have breast reductions to alleviate back pain. They are not experiencing a life-threatening condition, but are uncomfortable. Back pain is often difficult to quantify objectively, I believe.

There is so much to process about the subject of transgender. I don't care about the Christian viewpoint concerning it because they use a source that is hundreds of years old. I like your viewpoint, from a doctor who understands the repercussions of taking action too early in a child's life. There are some children whose parents chose the sex of their child after birth because of the body not forming normally. They may choose the wrong one, unfortunately. Now there are tests for the chromosomes that can distinguish a male from a female. Simply because a girl is a tomboy, or a boy is more effeminate than other boys does not mean their bodies need to be redirected.

This interests me because my granddaughter, who loved dresses and playing with dolls and makeup. She was boy crazy. Then in high school she came out as being gay, and a few months later she said she identifies as a boy. She was 17 at the time and wanted to get hormones to start the change. She came to this realization because of the people she met online, and the friends she hung out with. I am not against gays or transgenders, but I thought she might need to rethink the reassignment for a couple more years. First, it's hard enough being gay in this day and age, but transgender takes on a whole new world of hate. I am worried for her safety. Secondly, I wasn't sure it wasn't a phase (my daughter called it being "bi-curious", and we were afraid she would make a decision that she can't reverse.

My granddaughter is now 20. She is starting to put makeup on again, and is growing her hair out from the shaven/mohawk. She wanted to be called by her chosen male name of Cory, but now she has gone back to her given name of Sage. She says she is bi-sexual, which does not require major surgery. We always accepted her, no matter what. We just want her to be happy.

The moral of this story is, unless the child was born a hermaphrodite, there is no physical reason to get re-assignment surgery. Social media and friendships can have a major influence on young people and it may not always be helpful. If a child matures and still feels they are living in the wrong body, and have thought the consequences out thoroughly, they should wait to discuss reassignment with their doctors. As for society - due to differences in physical structure it is MY OPINION they should not try to enter into a sport that is primarily for one sex. There are intermural and multi-sex sports they can become involved with. We can't always get to compete as a different gender in a primarily same sex sport. Bathrooms are a simple solution - go to the bathroom of your biological sex, or a non-gender room. We don't have bathrooms for just male and female at home. Let's not make an already complicated situation even more complicated.

Legally, the doctor and the patient should be the ones to decide. There is going to be discrimination no matter what, by those who are too limited in seeing that not all life is the same - and it's none of their business what someone else does. The only thing the law needs to do is ensure that people are not being discriminated because of their gender, color, race or creed. We have enough laws and people looking over our shoulders.

There's no such thing as a human hermaphrodite. There are some hermaphroditic fish, snails, worms and a few reptiles. And of course plenty of plant species. To be a hermaphrodite, the individuals have to be reproductively functional as both sexes. Two worms find each other in the leaf litter, line up head to tail, slime the middle of their bodies together and both contribute sperm to the opposite partner. They each leave pregnant.

Humans can have what is called a Difference of Sex Development (DSD). For instance a man who has XXY chromosomes in his cells (Klinefelter Syndrome) is likely to grow small moobs. That doesn't make him a woman. Male and female mammals are uniquely different from each other, both evolved for a specific reproductive role.

Every person with a DSD is either male or female. Some people have sex characteristics that seem like the opposite sex, but they are that doesn't make them the opposite sex. Strictly speaking, if an individual has male DNA, they are male. Even if they don't grow a penis, such as is found in athletes with the DSD called 46XY 5-ARD. Some of those athletes have been able to finagle their way into female sports at the Olympics. They easily beat the crap out of biological females. Or as we call them, females.

All of this interesting variety of sexual development (DSDs) has nothing to do with the vast majority of men who call themselves women. Most of them have a sexual fetish (AGP) most likely caused by consuming too much porn. It plays out in their own life as they degrade women by mimicking them in the creepiest of ways.

Thank you for that clarification. I had looked it up before I wrote my comment and it said it was extremely rare. Transgender is a small percentage as well. So much hullaballoo over such a small percent of the population is ridiculous. I'm not making light of those who are transgender, but why are they getting up in arms for this? They need something to blow out of proportion because they don't have anything they have accomplished. Hate seems to bring out the lowest level. Why Lettia James is making such a big deal about this is also nuts.

XX Female Athletics's avatar

When you look at the problems caused by boys/men in female sports, male rapists in female prisons and the cost of publicly funded transitions, the impact is huge.

Heather Chapman's avatar

It's my understanding that the "few bad apples spoils the whole barrel" problem also applies to crime and income distribution and all kinds of other phenomena (although when talking about distribution of $$, you might call the problem "the Matthew effect." In economics, the pattern is called the Pareto principle.

Yup, economic theory turns up in that ancient source of social commentary, the bible: "For to everyone who has, more will be given, and he will have abundance; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away." (Matthew 25:29)

Kinda' wild.

For crime, the stats vary (and who knows which research uses the best method for counting), but Grok gives me this when I ask about it:

A landmark Swedish population-based study (covering 1973–2004) found that 1% of the population (persistent violent offenders) accounted for 63% of all violent crime convictions.

Classic longitudinal studies (e.g., Marvin Wolfgang's Philadelphia Birth Cohort from the 1940s–1950s) showed that about 6% of boys were responsible for around 50% (or more) of all offenses committed by the cohort.

Broader criminological reviews and meta-analyses often cite that roughly 10% of the population accounts for ~65% of crime, while 20% of offenders commit ~80% or more (aligning with the Pareto principle or "80/20 rule" applied to crime).

Eleganta's avatar

I like to call them VSDs (Variations of Sexual Development) because the transies don't know what that is, and it throws off their whole self-righteous tirade.

They think it's called being "intersex." I inform them that no human has ever in the entire history of the human race existed "between" the two sexes.

Brilliant. Thank you Ms. Goldis. Keep shining a light on this travesty. I made this comment on Kara Dansky’s Substack but AG James’ position on this issue is demented. She is a menace to women, girls and all the vulnerable people being taken advantage of by the trans medical industrial complex. Thank you for exposing her complicity. She will come to regret firing you. She probably already does- though she’ll never admit it as she is a rampant narcissist.
